Learning Management System (LMS)

A Learning Management System, commonly abbreviated as LMS, is software that organizations use to create, deliver, track, and manage employee training and professional development programs. An LMS centralizes learning content and progress tracking into a single platform, replacing what might otherwise be a fragmented mix of in-person sessions, scattered documents, and manual tracking of employee training completion. Most LMS platforms support a range of content formats, including video courses, interactive modules, quizzes, and downloadable resources, allowing companies to build structured learning paths for onboarding new hires, delivering compliance training, or supporting ongoing professional development. Administrators typically use the LMS to assign specific courses to employees, track completion rates, and generate reports demonstrating training compliance, which can be particularly important for mandatory training such as workplace safety or anti-harassment courses. For companies with distributed or international teams, an LMS is particularly valuable because it allows employees to complete training at their own pace, regardless of time zone or location, without requiring synchronous in-person sessions. Many platforms also support multiple languages and can help ensure consistent training content and standards are delivered uniformly across a global workforce, even when local context or examples may need some adaptation.
