Applicant Tracking System (ATS)
An Applicant Tracking System, commonly abbreviated as ATS, is software that companies use to manage the recruitment and hiring process, from posting job openings to collecting and organizing candidate applications, tracking candidates through each stage of the interview process, and ultimately supporting the final hiring decision. An ATS centralizes what would otherwise be a fragmented process involving spreadsheets, email threads, and manual resume screening into a single, organized system. Most ATS platforms include features such as resume parsing, which automatically extracts key information from submitted resumes, keyword-based filtering to help recruiters quickly identify qualified candidates among a large volume of applications, and collaboration tools that let hiring managers and interviewers leave feedback and move candidates through defined pipeline stages. Many systems also integrate with job boards to automatically distribute postings across multiple platforms at once. As companies scale their hiring, particularly when recruiting across multiple countries or offices, an ATS becomes essential for maintaining consistency and efficiency in the recruitment process. Some ATS platforms also integrate with broader HR and payroll systems, allowing candidate data to flow smoothly into onboarding workflows once a hire is made, which is particularly valuable for companies managing distributed or international teams.
