Human Resources Information System (HRIS)

A Human Resources Information System, commonly abbreviated as HRIS, is software that centralizes an organization's employee data and core HR processes, such as payroll, benefits administration, time tracking, and performance management, into a single, integrated platform. An HRIS replaces what would otherwise be a fragmented collection of spreadsheets and separate systems, giving HR teams a unified source of truth for employee information. A typical HRIS supports functions across the full employee lifecycle, from storing basic employee records and managing onboarding paperwork, to tracking time off balances, administering benefits enrollment, and generating reports for compliance or workforce planning purposes. Many systems also include self-service features that allow employees to directly access and update their own information without requiring HR intervention for routine requests. For companies with distributed or international teams, an HRIS becomes particularly valuable in providing a consolidated view of the entire workforce, even when employees are spread across multiple countries with differing local systems and requirements. Some HRIS platforms integrate directly with global payroll or Employer of Record services, allowing international employee data to flow into the same centralized system used for the company's broader workforce.
