Employee Resource Group (ERG)

An Employee Resource Group, commonly abbreviated as ERG, is a voluntary, employee-led group formed around a shared identity, background, or common interest, intended to foster a sense of community, belonging, and professional development among its members within the workplace. Common examples of ERGs include groups centered around shared cultural or ethnic backgrounds, gender identity, disability status, veteran status, or shared interests such as parenting or sustainability. ERGs typically organize activities such as networking events, educational sessions, mentorship opportunities, and discussions relevant to the group's shared focus, while also often serving as a resource for company leadership seeking employee input on policies or initiatives that affect the group's members. Many organizations provide some level of formal support for ERGs, such as a modest budget or executive sponsorship, to help sustain their activities. Supporting active ERGs is often part of a broader company strategy to build a more inclusive workplace culture, since these groups can provide valuable community and support for employees, particularly those who may otherwise feel isolated within the organization. For distributed and international companies, ERGs increasingly operate virtually, allowing members across different offices and countries to connect and participate regardless of physical location.
