Career Pathing

Career pathing is the process of mapping out the potential growth trajectories and skill development opportunities available to an employee within an organization, helping them understand what roles, responsibilities, and capabilities they might work toward over time. Rather than leaving career progression vague or undefined, career pathing gives employees a clearer sense of direction and the concrete steps needed to advance. Effective career pathing typically involves collaboration between the employee and their manager, often supported by broader company frameworks such as defined job levels, competency models, or internal mobility programs. It can include both vertical progression, such as moving into more senior roles within the same function, and lateral movement, such as transitioning into a different department to build new skills or explore different interests. Companies that invest in structured career pathing tend to see stronger employee engagement and retention, since employees who can see a clear future within the organization are less likely to look elsewhere for growth opportunities. For companies with distributed or international teams, career pathing also needs to account for differences in role structures and growth opportunities that may exist across different offices or markets, ensuring the experience feels equitable regardless of location.
