Internal Mobility

Internal mobility is the practice of moving employees into new roles, teams, or departments within the same organization, rather than the company relying solely on external hiring to fill open positions. This can include both vertical moves, such as a promotion into a more senior role, and lateral moves, such as an employee transitioning into a different function to build new skills or pursue different interests. Companies that actively encourage internal mobility typically benefit from faster time-to-fill for open roles, since internal candidates are already familiar with company culture and processes, along with improved employee retention, as staff who see genuine opportunities to grow and explore different paths within the organization are less likely to look for those opportunities elsewhere. Building strong internal mobility programs often involves creating transparent processes for employees to express interest in other roles and ensuring managers support, rather than block, internal transfers. For companies with distributed or international operations, internal mobility can also include cross-border moves, where an employee transfers to a role in a different country. These moves often introduce additional complexity around visa requirements, local employment contracts, and compensation adjustments, frequently requiring support from global mobility teams or an Employer of Record to execute compliantly.
