Onboarding

Onboarding is the structured, often multi-week or multi-month process a company uses to integrate a newly hired employee into the organization, covering everything from initial paperwork and system setup to job-specific training, cultural immersion, and building relationships with colleagues. Effective onboarding helps a new employee become productive more quickly while also fostering a sense of belonging and commitment to the organization from the very start of their tenure. A comprehensive onboarding program typically extends well beyond the first day, often continuing through the new employee's first several months, with structured check-ins, milestone-based training, and ongoing support to help them fully acclimate to their role and the broader organization. Well-designed onboarding programs are associated with improved new hire retention and faster time to productivity, since employees who feel supported and clearly understand expectations from the outset are more likely to succeed and remain with the company long-term. For companies with distributed or international teams, onboarding new hires who may never set foot in a physical office requires particular intentionality, often relying on virtual introductions, digital documentation, and proactive check-ins to replicate the kind of connection and support that happens more naturally in an in-person environment.
