Optional Practical Training

Optional Practical Training, commonly abbreviated as OPT, is a period during which international students in the United States on an F-1 student visa are authorized to work in a job directly related to their field of study, either during their academic program or, more commonly, for a defined period after graduation. OPT provides a pathway for international graduates to gain practical U.S. work experience without needing to immediately secure a separate work visa. Standard OPT typically allows eligible graduates to work in the United States for up to twelve months, though graduates in certain science, technology, engineering, and mathematics fields may qualify for an additional extension period beyond the standard duration, provided their employer meets specific program requirements. During this period, the individual remains in F-1 student status while working, rather than transitioning to a separate work visa category. For many international graduates, OPT serves as an important bridge that allows them to gain relevant work experience while their employer potentially pursues longer-term visa sponsorship, such as through the H-1B program, to allow the individual to continue working in the United States beyond the OPT period. Employers hiring OPT participants need to understand the specific eligibility and reporting requirements associated with this status.
