Org Chart
An org chart, short for organizational chart, is a visual diagram that illustrates a company's internal structure, showing how different roles, teams, and departments relate to one another and depicting the formal reporting lines from individual contributors up through management and leadership. Org charts provide a clear, at-a-glance reference for understanding who reports to whom and how the organization is structured. Org charts can be structured in various formats depending on the company's organizational design, ranging from traditional hierarchical charts with clear top-down reporting lines, to flatter structures with fewer management layers, or more complex formats reflecting a matrix organization where employees may report to more than one manager. Many companies maintain their org chart within HR software, allowing it to be easily updated as the organization evolves through hiring, promotions, and restructuring. Beyond simply documenting structure, a clear and accessible org chart helps new employees understand who to reach out to for different needs, supports workforce planning by highlighting gaps or areas of overlap, and provides transparency into the organization's overall shape. For distributed or international companies, org charts also help employees understand reporting relationships and team structures that might otherwise be less obvious without the visibility of a shared physical office.
