E-Verify

E-Verify is a U.S. government-run system that allows employers to electronically confirm a newly hired employee's eligibility to work in the United States by cross-referencing the information provided on Form I-9 against records maintained by the Department of Homeland Security and the Social Security Administration. While federal law requires all U.S. employers to complete Form I-9 for every new hire, use of E-Verify itself is mandatory only for certain employers, such as federal contractors or those in specific states that require it. The system works by having the employer submit key information from the employee's I-9 form, such as their name, date of birth, and Social Security number, into the E-Verify system shortly after hire. The system then returns a result indicating whether the information matches government records, confirming work authorization, or flags a mismatch that requires further action to resolve. E-Verify applies specifically to domestic U.S. hiring and does not extend to international employment situations. Companies building offshore teams or hiring employees outside the United States are not using E-Verify for those hires, since the system is tied specifically to confirming work eligibility within the U.S. domestic labor market.
