Social Security Tax

Social Security tax is a U.S. federal payroll tax that funds the Social Security program, which provides retirement, disability, and survivor benefits to eligible individuals. This tax is withheld directly from an employee's wages and is matched by the employer in an equal amount, together forming a portion of the broader FICA tax alongside the separate Medicare tax component. A key characteristic of Social Security tax is that it applies only up to an annual wage base limit, meaning that once an employee's earnings for the year exceed that threshold, no further Social Security tax is withheld for the remainder of the year, even though income tax and Medicare tax continue to apply. This wage base limit is periodically adjusted, requiring payroll systems to stay current with the applicable figure each year. Employers are responsible for accurately withholding the correct amount of Social Security tax from each employee's wages, tracking cumulative withholding against the annual wage base limit, and remitting both the employee and employer portions to the appropriate federal tax authorities. Because Social Security tax is specific to the U.S. system, employees working internationally are generally not subject to this particular tax, though similar social insurance contributions often apply under each country's own system.
