Software License Management
Software license management is the process of tracking, organizing, and controlling a company's software licenses to ensure the organization remains compliant with vendor licensing terms while avoiding unnecessary costs from unused or duplicate licenses. As companies rely on a growing number of software applications, effective license management has become an important part of overall IT and financial governance. A well-managed software license program typically maintains a clear inventory of all licenses the company holds, tracks which employees or teams are actively using each license, and monitors upcoming renewal dates to avoid unexpected lapses in access or unnecessary automatic renewals for tools no longer needed. This visibility helps companies identify opportunities to consolidate or eliminate underutilized licenses, potentially generating significant cost savings. Poor software license management can expose companies to compliance risk, since using more licenses than a company has actually purchased, whether intentionally or through oversight, can violate vendor agreements and result in financial penalties during a licensing audit. For companies with distributed or international teams, software license management also needs to account for how access is provisioned and monitored across employees working from various locations outside a centrally managed office environment.
