KPI (Key Performance Indicator)

A Key Performance Indicator, commonly abbreviated as KPI, is a measurable value that organizations use to track and evaluate how effectively an individual, team, or the company as a whole is progressing toward specific, defined business objectives. KPIs provide a concrete, quantifiable way to assess performance, rather than relying solely on subjective impressions of how well something is going. Effective KPIs are typically specific, measurable, and directly tied to a meaningful business outcome, rather than tracking activity for its own sake. Examples of common KPIs vary widely by function and role, ranging from sales revenue targets and customer satisfaction scores to employee retention rates and website conversion metrics, with the specific KPIs chosen reflecting what matters most for a given team or objective. Organizations use KPIs not just to measure past performance but to inform ongoing decision-making, helping teams identify where they are on track, where adjustments may be needed, and where additional resources or attention might be required. For distributed or international teams, KPIs also provide a valuable shared framework for measuring performance consistently across different locations, helping ensure alignment even when teams are not working in the same physical office.
