TN Visa
A TN visa is a nonimmigrant work visa category available to citizens of Canada and Mexico, established under the trade agreement between the United States, Mexico, and Canada, commonly known as USMCA, which succeeded the earlier NAFTA agreement. The TN visa allows qualified Canadian and Mexican professionals to work temporarily in the United States in a specific, predefined list of professional occupations outlined in the trade agreement. To qualify for a TN visa, an applicant generally must have a job offer from a U.S. employer for a role that falls within one of the specifically listed professional categories, and must typically hold the educational credentials or professional qualifications required for that occupation under the agreement's terms. Unlike some other U.S. work visa categories, the TN visa process for Canadian citizens can often be completed relatively quickly at the U.S. border or a port of entry, without requiring the lengthier processing associated with visas like the H-1B. The TN visa does not have an annual numerical cap and is not subject to a lottery process, making it a comparatively efficient pathway for eligible Canadian and Mexican professionals to work in the United States, provided their specific role and qualifications align with one of the designated occupational categories under the trade agreement.
