Off-Cycle Payroll
Off-cycle payroll refers to any payment issued to an employee outside of a company's regular, scheduled payroll cycle, typically used to address a specific need that cannot wait until the next standard pay date. Common reasons for issuing an off-cycle payment include correcting a payroll error from a previous pay period, paying out a final paycheck to a departing employee sooner than the next standard cycle, or disbursing a bonus or commission payment separately from regular wages. Processing an off-cycle payroll run requires the same level of accuracy and compliance as a standard payroll cycle, including correctly calculating applicable taxes and deductions, even though it occurs outside the normal schedule. Because off-cycle payments happen less frequently and often under time pressure, such as correcting an urgent error, they can carry a higher risk of mistakes if not handled carefully. Companies need clear internal processes for when and how off-cycle payroll runs are authorized and executed, since unplanned or frequent off-cycle payments can create additional administrative burden and increase the risk of compliance issues if not properly documented and reconciled with the company's overall payroll records.
