Employment Types & Classification

Global Contractor

A global contractor is an independent, self-employed worker who is engaged by a company to provide services from a country different than the company's own home base, without being classified as a formal employee of that company. Global contractors are commonly used by companies looking to access specialized skills internationally, test a new market, or engage talent for project-based work without committing to the greater complexity of formal employment in that country. Working with global contractors requires careful attention to worker classification rules, since many countries have specific legal tests to determine whether a working relationship should actually be classified as employment rather than independent contracting, based on factors such as the degree of control the company exercises, whether the contractor works exclusively for one client, and how integrated they are into the company's operations. Misclassifying a global contractor can result in significant financial and legal exposure in the contractor's home country. Companies engaging global contractors typically use specialized contractor management platforms or work with an Employer of Record that offers contractor compliance services, which help generate properly structured agreements, process compliant payments, and assess classification risk across the different countries where the company is engaging independent talent.
