Full-Time Equivalent

Full-Time Equivalent, commonly abbreviated as FTE, is a unit of measurement used to express the total workload represented by a company's part-time, variable-hour, or full-time staff in terms of the number of full-time employees that workload would represent. For example, two part-time employees each working half of a standard full-time schedule would together represent one FTE, even though the company technically has two separate individuals on staff. FTE calculations are commonly used for workforce planning and budgeting purposes, allowing companies to standardize how they measure staffing levels and labor costs regardless of how many actual individuals are involved or how their hours are distributed. This metric is also frequently used in a legal and regulatory context, such as determining whether a company meets certain employee count thresholds that trigger specific compliance obligations under laws like the Affordable Care Act or various leave entitlement statutes. Understanding and accurately calculating FTE becomes particularly important for companies with a mix of full-time, part-time, and contract staff, since miscalculating this figure can lead to incorrect assumptions about whether certain legal thresholds have been met. Companies operating internationally also need to be aware that the specific definition and calculation methodology for FTE can vary somewhat depending on the local regulatory context in each country.
