Exit Interview

An exit interview is a structured conversation conducted with an employee who is voluntarily leaving the company, typically held shortly before their departure, designed to gather candid feedback about their overall experience and their specific reasons for choosing to leave. Exit interviews provide organizations with valuable insight that can be difficult to obtain from current employees, who may be less willing to share fully honest feedback while still employed. A well-structured exit interview typically covers topics such as the employee's reasons for leaving, their perceptions of management and company culture, and any suggestions they have for improving the workplace. These conversations can be conducted by an HR representative, sometimes rather than the employee's direct manager, to encourage more open and candid responses without concern about how the feedback might affect a future reference. The real value of exit interviews comes from systematically analyzing patterns across multiple departing employees over time, since a single individual's feedback may reflect a unique personal situation, but recurring themes across many exit interviews can reveal genuine organizational issues worth addressing. Companies that take exit interview feedback seriously and act on recurring concerns are often better positioned to improve retention among their remaining workforce.
